Infrared saunas have been reported as being particularly effective at helping you to maintain a clear and bright complexion

When you break it down, our skin is a pretty amazing thing. It is the largest organ in the human body, and it is constantly exposed to the outside world and external forces. The pollution, stress and strains of modern everyday life can result in chemicals and impurities becoming embedded in our skin; further resulting in breakouts. Plus, whatever we are feeling is often reflected on our skin as well, with hormones also playing a part in our complexion.

There are so many benefits when it comes to using infrared saunas regularly. As well as claims of speeding up muscle recovery, boosting metabolism, and being hugely beneficial for our emotional wellbeing, infrared saunas have also been reported as being particularly effective at helping you to maintain a clear and bright complexion. The wavelengths of light can penetrate deeply into the skin, through the epidermal and dermal layers. With the ability to detoxify and eliminate infection, infrared saunas can thus serve to cleanse your skin from the inside out. Leaving it beautifully soft and reducing the need for makeup. There is also evidence to suggest that FIR saunas can improve the healing process as well as helping to reduce scarring.

Infrared Saunas and Skincare

We decided to explore some of the claims further, with a focus on the infrared saunas health and beauty benefits.

Detoxification

The heat in an infrared sauna will serve to open your pores, as well as stimulating intense sweating. This deep sweating is then correlated with an increased heart, improved blood flow and a boost in circulation. It also serves to push out the toxins in our skin, helping you to maintain that fresh-faced feeling that will last for longer and bolster the overall appearance of the skin whilst fighting infection. Many regular users of infrared saunas also propose they have seen a significant reduction in breakouts.

Anti-Ageing

Studies have frequently shown the manner in which regular infrared sauna use can enhance the production of collagen. This is the protein that gives out skin, hair and nails their structure, providing our skin with the strength and elasticity that it requires. One study found the majority of participants noticed a significant reduction in their wrinkles, removal of crows’ feet, and improved elasticity and firmness. Moreover, there is also some evidence to suggest that how infrared saunas encourage the stimulation of the production of sebum will also keep our skin looking fresh. Furthermore, through softening the follicles on your skin, shaving after a sauna can also enable you to get an extremely close shave. However, always avoid shaving before you get into the sauna.

Fighting Acne

Through detoxification and keeping those pores clean, infrared saunas have frequently been associated with reducing rates of acne. Acne is a result of oil and dirt building up on the skin and clogging up hair follicles and pores. It can be a result of puberty, hormones, stress or a whole host of other things, and it can significantly affect the lives of those that have it. Moreover, it has been suggested that infrared saunas can also be effective at reducing acne scarring and can even help to reduce blackheads.

Due to the way in which infrared saunas increase our heart rate, they are also fantastic at boosting our circularity system. Moreover, by improving capillary circulation, infrared saunas can help to break down impurities and prevent breakouts.

Skin Disorders

There are some skin disorders in which there is evidence to suggest that regular session in an infrared sauna can reduce the symptoms. For example, they can facilitate the removal of the hyperkeratotic scales that cause psoriasis and eczema. However, some conditions can actually be made worse by sauna use, like atopic dermatitis and rosacea. If you are concerned, seek medical advice before use.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

As we have already mentioned our skin can reflect the challenges that we are currently facing in our lives. Increased stress and pressure can result in more frequent breakouts and tired-looking skin. Moreover, broken sleep often affects our skin as well. A regular infrared sauna session can be significantly beneficial to our psychological and physical wellbeing, and they have been shown to help regulate circadian rhythms to ensure you get those all-important eights hours. Not only will this mean you will have the energy needed to face the day, but it can also mean your skin is kept bright and fresh.

Tips and Tricks

Whilst infrared sauna use can be an effective way of achieving clear skin, there are a few other things that you need to take into consideration, including:

  • The heat from the sauna will open and clear out your pores. However, if you do not close them after your sauna session, this can lead to further breakouts. As a result, washing your face with the coldest water afterwards is advised.
  • Make sure you replenish your fluids! Dehydration can have a negative effect on your skin and so it is always essential to drink plenty of water before, after and during your sauna session.
  • There is some debate about how long you should spend in the sauna, with most experts recommending around 10-20 minutes. Always get out if you are feeling too uncomfortable.
  • The hot temperatures of an infrared sauna can dry your skin out, and we recommend that you use a moisturiser after you have washed your face. A good tip is to apply your cream to damp skin in an attempt to seal in the moisture.
